Life In Chicago

Hey, guys, it’s Kiran.

I know I haven’t posted a lot lately, and I’m super sorry! But, at least I’m posting now!

I’m going to talk a little about our new life in Chicago, subcategory: school. Our school is great! We have 8 3D printers, 15 sewing machines, a laser cutter and a machine called the Carvey.

Here is what we have been learning in Trimester 1:

Humanities: Let me start off by saying that Humanities is a mix of language arts, writing and social studies. We have been working on personal narratives (stories that I hope to share with you soon!) and essay writing. My essay on the oil pipeline was actually for Humanities. We also were working on Wicked History, and I will see if I can post the video later. My group got assigned the infamous Vlad The Impaler, and we had to make a 5-10 minute newscast.

Science: We have been working on our cell projects. We are constructing a 3D model of a plant cell, and labeling the different parts.

Music: My class is working on playing ‘Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer’ on the chimes. We are also working on a song called Pat-A-Pan, and a song called 8 Days And Nights (a Hanukkah song).

IDEA Lab: We take an IDEA Lab course 2 out of 3 trimesters. During IDEA Lab, we learned to code in Python and used the laser cutters to make shelves out of wood for our final project.

Spanish: In Spanish class, we have been split into 3 groups. Each group was assigned a topic; cooking, the grocery store, and a restaurant. We created PowerPoints about our topic and made a test on the vocab in Spanish.

Art: In art, we are working on an ‘Artist In Residence’ program. Instead of doing regular art, we are learning drama. Each group takes a children’s book and makes a short play to present to the first and second graders.

Video Editing: Yes, this is a class. And yes, we get graded on it. We have done 2 major projects so far: a project where we had to take several clips of someone running and spruce it up with music, transitions, texts and rapid cuts. The another one is due after we get back from break; we have to take a video of someone using a musical instrument and make it look better with cool text and transitions.

  1. Love reading your thoughts, my brother would have loved all of this. You have amazing parents who remember my brother everyday. Thank you and thank them for me. Go Cubs beyond just this year. 👍👍
